First Ankle Update of 2011

Ankle Workout Plan

It’s 2011 and the first week of PT in 2011 was a good one. After spending enough time on an exercise bike to have completed the Tour-de-France…twice. I was finally cleared this week to get on the elliptical…Great news! So far I have done two 30 minute workouts on the elliptical and aside from just some minor pain that feels like it’s more from stiffness than anything else, all is well.

My swelling and bruising are almost completely gone. I’ve been taking an anti-inflammatory medication called Etodolac twice-a-day. I’ve been visiting Chris Jensen’s office twice a week doing really exciting exercises like balancing on a mat, doing short stints on a bike, balancing on a balance disc, and stretching on a slant board. The picture on this post is my exercise plan that I do at home every night, it’s as exciting as it looks. I have also switched from icing my entire ankle with a bag of ice, to doing ice massage every night. My freezer is now full of small dixie cups of ice that I rub against both sides of my ankle for about 5 minutes on each side. According to Dr. Bradley this will help get the ice deeper into the tendons over just the bag of ice.

My next appointment with Dr. Bradley is this Wednesday the 12th. Hopefully he’ll have some good news and be happier with how my ankle is coming along than he was during my last appointment. It was during my last appointment that Dr. Bradley said “That’s not good, your ankle isn’t working right.”

Think good thoughts on the 12th, I’m looking for the clearance to finally start running. I hear that’s a good thing to do when you’re training for a marathon!
