So after having a minor breakdown upon hearing that I had chipped my ankle, partially because I thought that I wouldn’t be able to run the marathon, partially because I am a bit of a drama queen (I know, I know none of you can believe this), and partially because I am perhaps the biggest baby when it comes to anything medical, dental, or anything that involves the words skin, bone, teeth, blood, muscles, tendons, needles, gauze, hospital, office, exam room…I think that you get the point. I pulled myself together just enough to make an appointment with an orthopedic a.k.a. my knight in shining armor, Dr. Bradley.
I went to see Dr. Mahlon Bradley at the Cummings Center in Beverly, MA. After I got over the nausea, sweating, and feeling of almost fainting because I was in a Dr.’s office. Dr. Bradley came in and after looking at my x-rays, touched my ankle to see where it hurt the most, and then looked at me and said “I have to protect you”. In my head this is what I thought to myself, “That sounds very nice and I like feeling protected but what does this have to do with my ankle? The girl I stepped on was young and quick, two attributes that I am terribly jealous of but technically it wasnt really her fault and she seemed very nice so I am not sure that I want you to do anything to her Dr. Bradley, I think that you’re being a littler over protective, besides we just met!” Dr. Bradley went on to explain that he wanted to immobilize my tendons and protect my ankle with a special brace. That’s right a brace!!! WOO HOO not a boot, not a cast, no crutches, just a brace! Things are looking up! Plus I get to start PT next week! Plus Dr. Bradley and I are on the same page, the goal is to get ready for 26.2 miles in April. GREAT NEWS!!! Good thing I didn’t cry and get all dramatic about this little chip off my ankle, THAT would have been ridiculous, I know some people have a tendency to jump to conclusions with stuff like this and I am sure glad I’m not one of them!
Special thanks to Mike, Jenn, Erin, Emily, Bridget, and Becky for being the people, who if I were to have been crying in my office after hearing about a minor chip in my ankle would have talked me off the ledge and also helped me find a Dr. Also a big thanks to Dr. Gabriel for his expertise in recommending someone, even though that guy was so good you couldn’t get an appointment with him. And a big thanks to everyone else for putting up with me this week I promise it won’t be this bad the whole time (famous last words)!
